Making Others Look and Feel Great
by Jodi Dean
Grandparents and parents, even aunts and uncles, often do not recognize their influence on the career choices of younger family members. The experiences of preceding generations may encourage those just starting out in life to follow in a relative’s professional “footsteps.”
Angie Harris found inspiration in three earlier generations of her family. Like these, she chose a vocation in making others feel beautiful—and, today, Angie is a co-owner of Achieva Salon & Spa in Bluffton, Indiana.
“Our salon is special,” explains Kim Leas, “because it has been passed down for three generations. Angie’s grandfather was a barber in same place that our salon is now. Her uncle, Randy Kunkle, was the owner of the former Hairs the Latest—that was also in this same building.”
For Kim, the other co-owner of Achieva Salon & Spa, family had nothing to do with her career path. She says, “I always loved pretending to style my friends’ hair when I was a little girl, so I just knew that was something that I wanted to do.”
Angie and Kim, both Wells County natives, became good friends and, over time, they realized that their interests and skill sets complimented one another. The pair purchased the business from Angie’s uncle, and in 1997, Achieva Salon & Spa was born.
“Angie and I are great friends,” says Kim, “and we communicate very well together. Her strengths are my weaknesses, and my strengths are her weaknesses, so we blend very well together. We are truly blessed to be partners in this business.”
Today, the two gals divide the daily management tasks, while maintaining their own lists of clients. From bookkeeping to scheduling, they work together as a team to keep the salon running smoothly.
In addition, Angie and Kim oversee seven stylists who provide hair services, nail care, and skin care to men and women of all ages. Achieva Salon & Spa offers a long list of services, including: haircuts, chemical and restorative treatments, waxing, special occasion styles, massage, manicures and more.
The staff at Achieva are passionate about their careers. Each considers it their calling to help others look and feel great. “What keeps us sane on a busy day,” says Kim, “are the girls that we work with. They are all amazing and a lot of fun.
“They are the Achieva family.” And, like family, the nine ladies spend time together away from work at the salon, enjoying one anothers’ company.
At Achieva Salon & Spa, owners and stylists alike use their talents and skills in service to others when the opportunity presents itself. As small business owners, Kim and Angie believe in the importance of giving back to the community that has shown them a great deal of support.
The ladies have been known to donate gift certificates for massages, manicures, or pedicures to charitable organizations in the area that are near and dear to their hearts. When appropriate, Achieva stylists encourage their clientele to donate long strands of hair to the nonprofit organization known as Kids with Wigs. The agency provides hair replacement systems and support, at no cost, to children who have lost their hair due to cancer and other medical issues.
The everyday gift offered by Achieva staff is a rather simple one—listening and responding to the wishes of clients. Whether a young boy is in need of a back-to-school haircut, or a bridal party gathers to have their make-up and hair done for a friend’s special day, the team of stylists is attentive to its clients. And, the stylists are quick to give helpful tips and share their expertise.
“In order to be a successful hairstylist,” Kim explains, “you need to be able to communicate well with all types of people. All of us here at Achieva have compassion for others, which helps build a strong relationship with customers.”
This sort of relationship ensures repeat business for stylists at Achieva Salon & Spa. And, happy clients are glad to recommend the business to friends and family members. “We have the best, most grateful and understanding clients,” Kim and Angie say.
For the owners of Achieva, operating a beauty salon is not complete without the support and love of their families—and, the moments of rest and relaxation in between. Both ladies are careful to enjoy some downtime in order to rejuvenate themselves.
Kim loves to work out and enjoy the great outdoors. “I love to boat and camp, when I can,” she says. She especially enjoys spending time with her husband Luke, three sons—Spencer, Hunter, and Walker—and a granddaughter, Sophia. “We enjoy going to the lakes and traveling.”
Angie’s outside pursuits aren’t all that different. “My husband, Scott, and I enjoy going to the beach together, and traveling.” She values time spent with her sons, Chase, Chandler, and Grant, and her daughter-in-law, Mal.
